Labyrinthine Food
Cuisine varies vastly between districts, but actually comes from relatively few sources. Magic is a key element in the growing and flavouring of most foods, allowing relatively small areas of production to feed a city of this size. This magical growth is largely managed by the City Druids, in the 7th District.
Common ingredients include:
- Mushrooms grown in huge magical hydroponic farms in the 7th, in all sorts of varieties and magically induced flavours (this is also the main ingredient in flour/bread).
- Fish caught in the river & the ports, including eels (this makes up the bulk of proteins).
- Slime harvested from domesticated oozes in the 7th, processed into Schmeat, a meat substitute. Many different varieties of this slime have been engineered, allowing for it to be used in many different forms and recipes.
- For the very poor, the bland but nourishing food of Create Food and Water is offered by many temples, seasoned as much as possible with what's available.
- Proper meat is only available for the rich, as it has to be imported from the Outlands, so it's rare to see as part of the cuisine.
- Honey from bees kept in the 7th is also used as a natural sugar in many recipes, as well as sugar refined from certain slimes and mushrooms.
