This rule is very similar to Blades in the Dark, and their SRD may be useful in understanding it. For any differences, use what's in this game.
When a trainer or Pokemon attempts something where the outcome is uncertain or there is an element of risk, you can roll to determine the outcome. Before a roll, the Player and GM discuss and agree on the desired outcome (goal), the potential dangers and consequences, the relevant Stat, any potential bonuses or penalties to the roll, and set position and effect accordingly.
A pool of dice is rolled, and the GM and Players use the highest resulting dice to determine the outcome.
Only the players roll. A player roll and its consequences also determine the outcomes for any NPCs or wild Pokemon's actions.
If a player rolls a 6 on at least 2 dice, the roll is a critical success, and they will get some additional benefit from the roll.
Position is determined by the GM and players, and represents the player character's control of the situation, and how severe the potential risks and consequencces of the action are. There are 3 positions, Controlled, Risky, and Desperate. A Controlled situation is one with minimal risk to the character, there will only be minor consequences for failure. A Risky roll has some danger to it, and a Desperate roll represents serious consequences on failure.
Impact is how . There are 3 main levels of impact: Limited (not very effective), Standard, and Great (super-effective!).. Actions can also have no effect, for example, attempting something normally impossible or hitting a Pokemon with a move they are immune to. Through bonuses, good circumstances, creative thinking, and Bond, players may be able boost their impact to Limited or even Standard.
On a Trainer roll, the players and GM decide what Stat is most relevant to the roll, and use that to determine the number of dice rolled, plus any bonus or penalty dice they may have from special moves or conditions. For example, if a trainer has 3d (3 dice) in a given stat, roll 3 dice and take the highest result. This is also how it works for a trainer with 1d, 2d, or 4d in a stat. If a Trainer has 0d (0 dice) in a stat, roll 2 dice and take the lowest, unless they can somehow get +1d.
When a Pokemon rolls, they don't have stats to add. Instead, they build their dice pool based on their Type, Traits, any relevant Moves they know, their Ability, and any other bonuses or penalties that apply (such as from the environment, weather, or items). Pokemon get +1d if:
Here are some other rolls that work slightly differently:
